How to Save Money on Your Dental Bills

By Catherine M. Fascilla, D.D.S.

In these uncertain economic times, everyone is concerned about saving money. In the area of dental costs, I feel very qualified to give expert advice. The following are a few recommendations that I feel will save you money immediately and in the long run.

The simplest and most important thing you can do to save on your dental bills is to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Most people brush their teeth at least once daily but do they brush them well? Oral hygiene is something most of us rush through and the majority of us don’t give brushing the extra couple of minutes that it takes to do a great job instead of just an okay job. I always tell my patients that it is what they do at home that makes the biggest difference.

The next most important thing one should do to save money on their dental bills is floss once a day. Flossing will greatly reduce your chances of developing gum disease and other health problems associated with gum disease. You’ll also reduce your chances of getting cavities between your teeth. Again with flossing, it must be done properly to be effective. Your dentist or dental hygienist will be happy to show you how.

The third most important thing to do to save money is to see your dentist at least twice a year. This will mean you will have had your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year. You will have had your teeth and gums checked at least twice a year. You will have had a few x-rays taken once a year and you will have had an oral cancer exam once a year. If by some chance, your excellent oral hygiene did not leave you cavity-free, you can rest assured that the amount of decay will likely be minimal. Most cavities are pain-free. If left untreated due to lack of detection, the cost of restoring a small cavity can rapidly snowball into treatment easily costing ten times more.

These recommendations may seem so simple. They are. It really is that simple. Prevention is very cost effective.
