Fluoride – Not Just Kid Stuff Anymore

By Catherine M. Fascilla, D.D.S.

Everyone knows that fluoride helps to prevent decay in children, but you may not be aware of the many benefits fluoride offers adult users.

As we age, gum recession may cause roots of the teeth to be exposed. Because the roots have no protective enamel, they may become susceptible to cavities and sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

Recent studies have shown that fluoride treatments routinely given to children after teeth cleanings also have advantages for adults. In fact, a study done at the University of Iowa showed that adults who were given fluoride treatments had 67% less cavities than non users. Fluoride should be given after a complete dental prophylaxis (cleaning) by thoroughly irrigating the teeth and gum tissue. Adult users who receive a fluoride treatment at their dental appointments, and continue use of topical fluoride products at home, are less prone to decay and also enjoy less plaque, tartar, and bacteria which can lead to gum disease. Fluoride can really give you something to smile about.
